Tools Required: Appropriate height ladder or Genie lift, pair of scissors, scotch tape,
white vinyl glue, retracting tape measure, sharp knife or razor blade
and a cigarette lighter. The lighter is needed to melt and finish off the
cut ends of the braided Dacron side cords. Notice how the finished
ends of the new cords were prepared at the factory.
It is advisable to have an extra person assist with this job.
- The screen roll must be in the full down position. You must be able to see the side line attachment Philips screw head facing down through the screen slot towards the floor. There will be about 1 wrap of sideline still remaining on the roller tube. In
some instances in order to proceed with this repair, the screen motor’s down stop limit switch may have to be reset to achieve the proper full down position of the screen.
- Carefully remove the sideline attachment screw and pull a small length of the existing sideline down through the screen slot on the front side of the roller tube. Do Not pull this piece around and over the backside of the roller tube. Use a pair of scissors to cut off the existing knot.
- Tape the new sideline to this end of the existing sideline. The purpose of this is to make it easier to thread the new sideline back over the roller tube and down through the screen tabs.
4. Pull (thread) the new sideline over the front side of the roller tube and down through
all of the side tabs with the existing cord. Leave a small length of the new sideline
remaining in order to help make the reattachment to the screw a bit easier. Also make
sure there is approximately 20” extra length down at the batten. Reinstall the Philips
screw to the roller tube and tie a double knot near the end of the sideline around this
screw. Tighten down the attachment screw over this knot. Make sure the new sideline
starts toward screen edge after the screw/washer has been tightened down. Trim off
any excess sideline. Use the lighter to melt the cut and roll / pull between folded
paper to finish off the end.
You will find that the next steps will be easier if you have an extra person to help
make the necessary measurements.
5. Use a sharp knife or razor blade to cut off existing knot in top chain length located at the end of the batten. With the tape measure, find the distance from the bottom of the case to the top of the batten on the attached side of the batten. The tape measure’s hook will catch on the inside lip of the screen box. Move the tape measure over to the side you are working on and lift the batten up with the new side line to the exact measurement you just saw on the other end of the batten. You will have threaded the sideline through the top chain length. The object here is to achieve a parallel batten to the screen case once these procedures are completed. (Tolerance is + or – 1/4”). Make a new double knot in the chain length. Cut off excess cord and use the lighter to melt the cut and roll / pull between a folded piece of paper to finish off the end. We suggest coating the knot with white vinyl glue when finished.
6. Reset the screen’s deployment limit position and job will be completed.
